UFO ROBOT GRENDIZER
جريندايزر
First
aired in Japan from the 5th of Oct. 1975 to the 25th of Feb. of 1977
Planet
Fleed lives in peace and tries not being involved in the war the
inhabitants of the Vega star system triggered throughout the galaxy
with conquest in their minds. Suddenly, Vegans attack and destroy
Fleed. Only the planet's crown prince, Duke Fleed, manages to flee
onboard Fleed's most advanced weapon, Grendizer. On Earth, he meets
Prof. Umon, who adopts him and gives him the terran name Daisuke. Along
with Koji Kabuto, Hikaru Makeba and, at a later time, his long-believed
dead sister Maria Grace, Daisuke fights against King Vega who has
decided to conquer Earth because the star Vega is about to die. Created
during a moment when all over the world (and particularly in Japan)
there was a strong interest in unexplainable, UFO- and saucer-related
phenomena, Grendizer is a giant robot which in its off-mode lies in a
flying saucer. The same holds true for Grendizer's enemies, the Vegans,
whose technology is designed saucer-shaped. Umon possesses a ranch
where Daisuke lives. The rancher, Rigel, is a firm believer in the
existence of flying saucers and, oftentimes, we can see him bent on
scanning the sky with his tiny telescope. "Ufo Robot Grendizer" can be
considered the third chapter, the concluding one, of a saga started
with "Mazinger Z" and continued with "Great Mazinger." The only link is
the character Koji Kabuto: in Mazinger Z he was the protagonist
piloting the robot, in Great Mazinger he appears at the end of the
series, and in Ufo Robot Grendizer he leaves the piloting of a robot to
go piloting a flying saucer and, later on, the Double Spacer (a module
allowing Grendizer to fly in the atmosphere without its own saucer).
The characters' psychology was at its lowest in "Mazinger Z," was a bit
deeper in "Great Mazinger," and receives its spotlight finally in "Ufo
Robot Grendizer," especially where its protagonist, Daisuke, is
concerned. Daisuke is sad and gloomy almost all of the time (it came as
no surprise that he became an idol for female viewers)
and we cannot
blame him for being so: up to the final episodes of the series, he has
a sword of Damocles hanging upon him: as he was fleeing from Fleed, he
had been infected by Vegatron and his life expectancy was therefore
quite short. An old friend of his, managing to free temporarily himself
from Vega's brainwashing, will be able to heal him.
On the far away planet Fleed a harsh war is being fought. Evil
King
Vega's soldiers, out of survival reasons, attack the helpless
population in order to subjugate them. The star Vega is dying and, for
its thousands inhabitants the only hope for survival is emigrate on
another planet. The people, governed by the military, do not debase by
requesting help: on the contrary, they decide to conquer by force a new
home. Planet Fleed is annihilated by the enemy forces. The massacre's
only survivor is Prince Duke who manages to get to Earth onboard his
Grendizer. Adopted by Prof. Umon, who knows his past, he is introduced
in terran society with the name "Daisuke." The alien threat goes on.
Soon made the conquered planted unstable, King Vega decides to turn his
ambition upon our planet. Daisuke, therefore, gets ready to defend the
Earth inhabitants from the grave menace with the help of Koji Kabuto
(Double Spacer's pilot), Hikaru Makiba (Marine Spacer's pilot), and his
long-believed dead sister Maria Grace Fleed (Drill Spacer's pilot). The
battle is harsh, but the final victory will be our heroes'. Once put
the war behind them, Duke and Maria will return to their home-world,
which is being born anew, to help it flourish again. Original plot by
Go Nagai, animated version by Toshi Testuka, character design by Kazuo
Komatsubara (episodes 1-48) and Shino Araki (49-end), background music
by Shunsuke Kikuchi, scripts by Shozo Ueara and Keisuke Fujiwara,
direction by (to name a few) Tomoharu Katsumata, Masamume Ochiai,
Masayumi Akemi.
"Ufo Robot
Grendizer's" Characters

Daisuke
- Planet's
Fleed's prince, he leaves his home when Vega invades it. He will fight
with Grendizer against King Vega, bent on conquering Earth. Later on in
the series he will find again his sister, Maria, believed dead during
the Vegans' attack upon Fleed.
|

Koji Kabuto
-
Mazinger Z's pilot comes back in this series as the pilot of the flying
saucer 'TFO' and, later on, of the Double Spacer, a module allowing
Grendizer to fly. The question haunting every single fan of the series
is: "Why is Koji non piloting Mazinger Z at least every once in a
while, as it could be much more useful than the TFO?"
|

Dr. Umon
- The
scientist taking in Daisuke as his son is the director of the space
research center.
|

Hikaru Makiba - Dambi's
daughter, has a crush on Daisuke. Later on in the series she will
become the pilot of the Marine Spacer, a module allowing Grendizer a
greater amount of freedom underwater.
|

Maria
- Daisuke's
younger sister. She makes her first appearance later on in the series,
as it was believed she had perished on Fleed. She will become the pilot
of the Drill Spacer, a module allowing Grendizer to move underground.
Her full name is Maria Grace Fleed.
|

King Vega
-
Vega's
undisputed leader, he is
directly responsible for planet Fleed's invasion and, as a consequence,
for the death of Daisuke and Maria's parents. He has no compunction in
using his own daughter, Duke Fleed's betrothed, for his own evil plans.

Grendizer's Weapons
- Double Arken
- Hanjuryoku Storm - This weapon is not powerful, but useful.
It has
a special place in the fans' hearts due to its scenic effect: a rainbow
beam springs outwards from the red blade on Grendizer's breast, rising
the enemies in the sky with its anti-gravity effect.
- Shoulder Boomerang - The blades Grandizer sports on its
shoulders
are not only the blades forming the Double Arken but they also have the
possibility to strike the target at high speed and then return at their
place.
- Hand Beam - Grandizer can emit violet laser beams from the
three
openings it has on its hands' backs. This weapon can be used even when
Grandizer is in its saucer.
- Space Thunder - Very similar to Great Mazinger's Thunder
Break. A
white beam is conveyed through Grandizer's side horns and fired by its
little frontal horns.
- Screw Scrasher Punch - Every robot of Master Nagai has a
punch-related weapon and Grandizer is no exception. The weapon is
formidable due to blades rotating at more than 4 thousands revolutions
per minute. It is a decisive weapon for Grendizer.
- Spin Saucer - Weapon exclusive to Grandizer's saucer. They
are
blades detaching from the saucer and striking the enemy at high speed.
They are often used to destroy Vega's mini-saucers.
- Drill Saucer - The Spin Saucer hide internally little
cannons
firing drill-like missiles. These are used exclusively against Vega's
mini-saucers.
